rm: cannot remove `pugs': Stale NFS file handle

After some cp -auv action and a SIGINT (Ctrl + C), I was not able to remove some files. They all resulted in the above error, though it was not a NFS related error. An fsck for the respective partition corrected it and I was able to remove the files.
